Silent Night 04:17
Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born Silent night, holy night! Son of God love's pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face With dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord, at Thy birth Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

about

Even though Silent Night has been recorded and refined many times, I wanted to put my own fingerprints on it and experience what would come about. As it turned out, this became a little passion project for me as this is my favorite Christmas Carol. This also became an exercise in trying some different ideas for recording and song craft.

When imagining the birth of Christ, I think most of us keep some image of the nativity scene of some form or another in our mind. It's an image that seems to place a nice bow on a package. It's pleasant, but I would strongly argue that the birth of Jesus was much more messy, chaotic, and even downright weird. If one reads the different stories written down about the events, they will most likely notice a lot of interesting things going on up front and running in the background which leaves a lot of wondering and mystery. I hope to convey some of those wonderings and nuances within these two (very different) recordings.
In the end, Silent Night stands as a call and a prayer for peace as well as a celebration of the mystery of Jesus.

The album art is my interpretation of the Silent Night Chapel located in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. This chapel was constructed in the early 20th century as a monument to the famous Christmas carol. It now sits in the location of the Church of St. Nicholas, where the song was first performed in 1818.
